Zesty Lemonade Puppy Chow 🍋

There is something about the combination of tart lemon and sweet vanilla that just feels like sunshine in a bowl. This Lemonade Puppy Chow is one of our favorite "homeschool treats"—it’s quick enough to whip up during a mid-morning break and fun enough that my 5 and 6-year-olds can do most of the shaking!

If you’re a fan of those "styled links" I share, this recipe is best served in a large ceramic bowl (perfect for sharing!) and looks beautiful on any spring table.

📋 Recipe Overview

  • Prep time: 10 mins ⏱️

  • Set time: 15 mins ❄️

  • Yields: 9 cups of pure joy!

🛒 What You’ll Need

  • [Large Glass Mixing Bowls]Great for seeing the coating process!

  • [Microplane Zester]For that optional (but highly recommended) extra zing.

  • [Airtight Storage Containers]To keep it crunchy (if it lasts that long!).

🧂 Ingredients

  • 9 cups Rice Chex cereal

  • 2 cups Vanilla melting wafers (I highly recommend Ghirardelli for that professional finish)

  • 1 stick Unsalted butter

  • 8 tbsp Lemon juice (fresh is best!)

  • 2 cups Powdered sugar

  • Optional: Fresh lemon zest for an extra pop of color and flavor 🍋

👩‍🍳 Instructions

Step 1: Melt & Mix 🥣

In a medium microwaveable bowl, combine your vanilla melting wafers, lemon juice, and the stick of butter.

  • MOM TIP: Heat in 30-second increments, stirring in between. This prevents the chocolate from seizing and keeps the mixture silky smooth. 🥄

Step 2: The Big Coat 🥣

Measure out 9 cups of Rice Chex into a separate, extra-large mixing bowl. Pour your smooth lemon-vanilla mixture over the cereal.

  • The Technique: Use a rubber spatula to gently fold the mixture until every single piece of Chex is fully coated. We want maximum flavor in every bite! 🍴

Step 3: The "Kids' Favorite" Shake 🛍️

Transfer the coated Chex into an extra-large freezer bag. Add the 2 cups of powdered sugar.

  • The Fun Part: Seal the bag tightly (double-check that seal!) and let the kids shake it until the cereal is snowy white and perfectly coated.

Step 4: The Finishing Touch

Pour the puppy chow out into a large serving bowl. If you want that "styled" look, zest a fresh lemon over the top. It adds a beautiful bright yellow fleck and an amazing aroma.

Step 5: Enjoy! 😋

Try not to eat it all at once! (Though I make no promises—it’s addictive!)

💡 Erica’s Stylized Tip

This snack is perfect for spring parties or homeschooling treat bags. I love to serve this in [these individual glass jars] to keep portions easy for the kids and looking chic on my counter.
